What Do You Want From Me?

I have been listening to the last Pink Floyd project, The Division Bell, and discovered the gem on the album. It is a song that questions what we want versus what we need. That is the question that has perplexed man since he was smart enough to ponder the difference between a navel and a fleet of ships. What do I want? What do I need? Is this a question that I have enough depth to figure out on my own? Oh ye of little faith. Am I so shallow that I cannot see which path I need to take versus which path that strategically fulfills my ends? After all, the ends justify the means. Or do I take the approach that every action I take, reflects the depth of my faith to always do the right thing? Please define always.

I know that most of the time I fail as a Christian. I know what Christ would have me do but I somehow fail to live up to that level of conviction. Somehow I ask myself the question what would I do if I had anything I want? I always answer in a fashion that benefits me or the members of my family. Screw world peace. It is something that is relegated to the Miss America pageant.

Unfortunately, what I want is for my family to be successful. I want my kids to achieve high marks in school and be the best in their extra-curricular activities. I want my wife to be the salesman of the month every month. I want those around me to achieve the dreams they are chasing. By them achieving their dreams, I vicariously live through their successes. I also suffer through their failures. I can drift, I can dream, I can walk on water, anything I want.

As you look around this room tonight Settle in your seat and dim the lights
Do you want my blood, do you want my tears
What do you want
What do you want from me
Should I sing until I can't sing any more
Play these strings until my fingers are raw
You're so hard to please
What do you want from me
Do you think that I know something you don't know
What do you want from me
If I don't promise you the answers would you go
What do you want from me
Should I stand out in the rain
Do you want me to make a daisy chain for you
I'm not the one you need
What do you want from me
You can have anything you want
You can drift, you can dream, even walk on water
Anything you want
You can own everything you see
Sell your soul for complete control
Is that really what you need
You can lose yourself this night
See inside there is nothing to hide
Turn and face the light
What do you want from me
