Inspiration

I have never been a fitness fanatic. I enjoy the leisurely walk and I actually enjoy jogging. I did alot of running in the Army and enjoyed getting out and putting some miles on the shoes. Once you got away from the hustle and bustle it was relaxing to let the mind wander and just think about what ever came to mind. I have not been able to run for the last several years because my knees could not stand the pounding. When you are away from it for too long, it takes a while to grow accoustomed again. I saw a show this weekend while scanning the channels that I think may allow me to once again start running.

It was a PBS show on various health and home things. One of the segments was on preparing to jog. It told what kind of shoes to get, how to warm up and what to expect while running. One of the things they said is if you feel like walking stop and walk. When you feel like running again, start running. This should be one of those common sence things but it was like a roman candle went off in my head. Duh. I was taught to push. If it wasn't hurting, it wasn't doing any good. That may work once you get a little conditioning or when you are young. Not sound advice for the over 40 crowd.

So this morning, I got up 30 minutes early and went for a jog. Hopefully, my knees won't start screaming later today and my shins will behave. Either way, it was a fun morning. I went around the jogging path in front of my house twice which is about two miles. I ran about one mile and walked one. We will work up to seeing how long it takes to stay running the whole two miles and go from there. Baby steps.
